Swiss Army “Salt & Pepper” Rucksack

An original Swiss Army rucksack, produced for military issue and constructed from heavy-duty cotton canvas with reinforced vegetable-tanned leather components.

The main body is made from tightly woven “salt & pepper” canvas in a subdued grey-green tone, chosen for its durability and resistance to abrasion. With time, the fabric has softened while retaining its structural integrity, developing gentle tonal shifts and surface texture that speak to age rather than wear.

Structural reinforcement, straps, and closure elements are executed in thick, full-grain leather, minimally finished to preserve the material’s natural character. The leather displays measured creasing, surface marks, and gradual deepening of color — a patina formed through long-term use and handling. Metal hardware is functional and understated, aligned with Swiss military standards of precision and longevity.

The closure system is deliberate and efficient, securing the form without excess. Each component exists in service of function, resulting in a balanced silhouette defined by material quality and proportion rather than ornamentation.

A disciplined and enduring object, representative of mid-20th-century Swiss military design, valued today for its material honesty, quiet utility, and lasting relevance.
